What is United Airlines required to pay you for a delayed or cancelled flight?
On US flights, United owes you a refund, not a payout. The DOT's automatic refund rule (14 CFR Part 260) requires cash back when United cancels your flight or makes a significant change (3+ hours domestic, 6+ hours international, a new airport, an added connection or a downgrade) and you decline the alternative. It covers non-refundable and Basic Economy fares. Card refunds are due within 7 business days, other payments within 20 calendar days.
No US law pays cash for delays: the DOT withdrew its delay-compensation proposal in 2025. United's Customer Commitment covers controllable disruptions only: free rebooking, a meal voucher after 3 hours, and a hotel plus transport for an overnight. Bumped from an oversold flight? Federal rules pay 200–400% of your one-way fare, capped at $1,075 or $2,150.
Fixed cash comes from foreign rules. EU261 and UK261 cover United flights departing the EU or UK, Canada's APPR covers flights to or from Canada, and Israel's Aviation Services Law covers flights to or from Israel.
Important
EU261 follows the departure airport. Frankfurt to Newark on United is covered (up to €600); Newark to Frankfurt on United is not, because inbound flights count only on EU carriers. A refund or travel credit never cancels statutory compensation you are owed on top.
Am I Eligible for United Airlines Compensation?
Likely eligible:
- United cancelled your flight, or moved it 3+ hours (domestic) or 6+ hours (international), and you didn't fly
- You arrived 3+ hours late on a flight departing the EU or UK, for a cause within United's control
- You arrived 3+ hours late on a flight to or from Canada for a controllable, non-safety reason
- Your flight to or from Israel was cancelled or departed 8+ hours late
- You were bumped involuntarily from an oversold flight after checking in on time
- United parked your refund as travel credit you never agreed to accept
Unlikely to be eligible:
- A US domestic delay you still flew (no federal cash payout, only care for controllable delays)
- A genuine extraordinary circumstance: severe weather, ATC restrictions, security or airspace closures
- A United-operated flight into Europe or the UK
- You cancelled voluntarily or didn't show up
- You want lost wages, missed events or pre-paid hotels paid as "compensation"
How Much Can You Claim?
Scenario
Distance band
Amount per person
Cash back to your original payment method when United cancels or significantly changes your flight and you don't travel. Credit is optional; you can refuse it and ask for money.
EU261, UK261, APPR or Israeli law pays a fixed sum on top of any refund. Claim from United in writing, then escalate to the regulator if refused.
If United refuses a refund it owes, dispute the charge with your card issuer. Visa and Mastercard windows usually run around 120 days from the flight date.
Covers what airlines won't: extra hotel nights, missed events, non-refundable bookings. Many premium cards include trip-delay cover, even for weather disruptions.

Key insight:
Common United Airlines Claim Mistakes
"I took the travel credit, so I'm done."
Credit settles the fare at most. EU261, UK261, APPR or Israeli compensation is still owed on top.
"They said weather, so there's no payout."
Ask for the reason in writing. A crew or maintenance problem labelled as weather is still within United's control.
"It only left late, that doesn't count."
EU and UK compensation uses arrival at your final destination, including missed connections on a single booking.
"I booked on Expedia, so United won't deal with me."
The operating airline owes statutory compensation however you booked. Only the refund may run through the seller.
"It was two years ago, too late now."
UK claims run six years, and several EU countries allow three to five.
"I only need to check the one bad trip."
Most frequent flyers have more than one eligible flight. An inbox scan finds disruptions you forgot.
"My ticket was cheap, so the payout is tiny."
EU261 and UK261 pay by distance, so a €300 fare out of Frankfurt can still earn €600.
"My Tel Aviv flight was cancelled, so I'm owed NIS 3,670."
Conflict-related closures usually count as extraordinary circumstances. You're owed a refund and care, not fixed compensation.
