What is Qatar Airways required to pay you for a delayed or cancelled flight?

Qatar Airways is a non-EU airline, so the direction you fly decides your rights. EU261 covers its flights departing an EU, EEA or Swiss airport, and UK261 covers UK departures, including the onward connection from Doha on the same booking. Flights from Doha to Europe or the UK are not covered. US DOT rules require a cash refund when a US flight is cancelled or moved by 6+ hours, and Canada's APPR pays for controllable delays on flights to or from Canada.

Compensation and a refund are separate. A refund returns your fare; compensation is a fixed cash sum for the disruption. If Qatar Airways cancels, you can insist on a refund to your original payment method instead of a voucher. Direct bookings use the airline's online refund form; agent bookings go back through the agent.

On top of either, the Montreal Convention covers proven delay costs and baggage losses, up to 6,303 SDR and 1,519 SDR per passenger.

‍

Important

Your flight home from Doha has no EU261 or UK261 cover, even on a round trip booked in Europe. On covered routes, the 2026 Qatari airspace closure and the October 2026 Riyadh and Dammam suspensions count as extraordinary circumstances: no cash compensation, but your refund and duty of care still apply.

Am I Eligible for Qatar Airways Compensation?

Likely eligible:

  • You arrived 3+ hours late from an EU or UK departure, for an in-control cause.
  • Your flight was cancelled with under 14 days' notice and you weren't rerouted close to your original times.
  • You were denied boarding due to overbooking after checking in on time.
  • You missed a Doha connection on a single booking that started in the EU or UK.
  • Your US flight was cancelled or changed by 6+ hours and you declined the alternative.
  • Qatar Airways still owes a fare refund it never paid, or parked as a voucher you didn't agree to.

‍

Unlikely to be eligible:

  • Your arrival delay was under 3 hours.
  • Your flight departed Doha (no EU261 or UK261 payout, though refund rights remain).
  • The cause was extraordinary, such as an airspace closure, airport attack or severe weather.
  • You were told 14+ days in advance and offered a reasonable alternative.
  • You cancelled voluntarily or didn't show up.

‍

How Much Can You Claim?

Compensation is fixed by flight distance, not by what you paid for the ticket.

Scenario

Distance band

Amount per person

3+ hr delay or late cancellation, EU departure (e.g. Paris, Frankfurt, Rome, Warsaw to Doha or beyond)
Same, on shorter EU legs ending in Doha (e.g. Athens, Bucharest)
3+ hr delay or late cancellation, UK departure
Controllable delay, flight to or from Canada
Cancellation or 6+ hr change, US route
Over 3,500 km
1,500–3,500 km
Over 3,500 km
3 / 6 / 9+ hrs late
Any
€600 (€300 if 3–4 hrs late)
€400
£520 (£260 if 3–4 hrs late)
CAD 400 / 700 / 1,000
Full cash fare refund (no fixed payout)
Statutory Compensation

Fixed cash under EU261, UK261 or Canada's APPR for in-control delays and cancellations. Paid per passenger, on top of any refund. Distance or delay length sets the amount.

Fare Refund

Your fare back to the original payment method when Qatar Airways cancels or significantly changes your flight. You can refuse a travel voucher and insist on cash.

Card Chargeback

If Qatar Airways cancels and never refunds, dispute the charge with your card issuer inside the scheme window. UK Section 75 adds joint liability on credit card purchases over £100.

Travel Insurance

Covers costs no airline rule pays: missed hotels, separate onward flights, and expenses from cancellations caused by airspace closures or other extraordinary events.

Key Rules & Distinctions

Statutory Compensation

What counts is when you reach your final destination. Arrive under 3 hours late and there is no cash compensation, even if the cause was within Qatar Airways' control.

Departure decides the rule

EU261 and UK261 only apply to Qatar Airways flights leaving the EU, EEA, Switzerland or UK. Doha-to-Europe flights are not covered, because Qatar Airways is a non-EU carrier. US DOT covers US routes; APPR covers Canada routes.

Doha connections count

If your trip started in the EU on one booking, a late Doha-to-Bangkok leg is still covered under the EU Court's Wegener ruling (C-537/17). Distance runs to your final destination, so most trips reach €600.

Extraordinary circumstances

Airspace closures, war-driven route suspensions, airport attacks and severe weather remove cash compensation. A technical fault, crew shortage or IT outage does not. Qatar Airways must prove the cause, not you.

Refund vs rerouting

On a cancellation, you choose a refund or rerouting to your destination. Under EU261, a departure delay of 5+ hours also lets you take a refund instead of flying.

Cash refund vs travel voucher

You can insist on cash to your original payment method. A Qatar Airways voucher is optional, and accepting one for the fare does not cancel a separate compensation claim.

Qatar Airways Compensation: Up to €600 for Delays & Cancellations

Time limits run from the flight date and depend on where the claim is filed.

Claim type

Time Limit

UK261 (UK courts)
EU261 (departure-country courts)
US DOT refund
Montreal Convention (delay, baggage)
Card chargeback / UK Section 75
6 years (England & Wales); 5 years (Scotland)

The value is not the form. It is knowing which legs are covered, challenging a reflex "extraordinary circumstances" or voucher reply, and filing before the window closes.

Common Qatar Airways Claim Mistakes

"I accepted the travel voucher, so I'm sorted."

A voucher is not a refund and does not settle compensation. You can still pursue cash for both.

‍

"They blamed the airspace, so no payout."

Only disruptions the closure actually caused qualify. A technical fault or crew shortage on a rebuilt schedule stays compensable, and Qatar Airways must prove the cause.

‍

"It was only delayed at takeoff."

Only arrival time at your final destination matters. A late departure that lands on time pays nothing; the reverse can pay.

‍

"My Doha-to-London flight was late, so UK261 pays."

Not on a non-UK airline. Only UK departures are covered; the leg home from Doha relies on refund and Montreal Convention rights.

‍

"The delay happened in Doha, so EU law doesn't apply."

If your trip started in the EU on one booking, the Doha connection is covered and the whole journey's distance sets the payout.

‍

"It was months ago, too late now."

Limits run to years in the UK and most EU countries, not months. Older Europe-departure flights are often still claimable.

‍

"My ticket was cheap, so the payout is small."

Compensation is set by distance, not fare. A discounted Frankfurt-to-Doha seat still qualifies for the €600 band.

‍

"The flight was cancelled because of the war, so I'm owed €600."

Airspace closures and airport attacks are extraordinary circumstances. They remove cash compensation, but your refund and duty of care survive in full.

Frequently Asked
Questions

Am I owed compensation for my Qatar Airways flight?

Possibly, if the cause was within Qatar Airways' control and your route is covered.

  • EU/UK departures: a 3+ hour arrival delay or late cancellation can pay cash.
  • Canada routes: controllable delays of 3+ hours pay under APPR.
  • US routes: cancellations and 6+ hour changes trigger a cash refund.
  • Extraordinary circumstances remove the cash, not your refund.

‍

How much compensation can I get from Qatar Airways?

It depends on route and distance, not your ticket price.

  • EU261: €400 or €600 on most Qatar Airways routes.
  • UK261: £520 on UK departures to Doha and beyond.
  • Canada APPR: CAD 400, 700 or 1,000 by delay length.
  • US DOT: the full cash value of the fare, not a fixed payout.

‍

Does EU261 apply to Qatar Airways?

Only on flights departing an EU, EEA or Swiss airport.

  • Paris, Frankfurt or Rome to Doha: covered.
  • Doha to Europe: not covered, because Qatar Airways is a non-EU carrier.
  • Onward connections from Doha on the same booking are covered.
  • Revised EU261 rules apply from 23 October 2027, with the same thresholds.

‍

What is the difference between a Qatar Airways refund and compensation?

They are separate rights, and you can be owed both.

  • Refund: your fare back to the original payment method.
  • Compensation: a fixed cash sum for the disruption itself.
  • A voucher settles neither unless you choose to accept it.
  • The refund survives even when extraordinary circumstances apply.

‍

Should I accept a Qatar Airways travel voucher instead of a refund?

Only if you would rather have the voucher than cash.

  • You can refuse a voucher when Qatar Airways cancels your flight.
  • A voucher locks your money into future Qatar Airways travel.
  • Accepting one does not cancel a separate compensation claim.
  • On US routes, DOT rules entitle you to cash unless you agree otherwise.

‍

What if I booked my Qatar Airways flight through an online travel agent?

Compensation is still owed by Qatar Airways, not the agent.

  • Compensation claims go to Qatar Airways directly.
  • Fare refunds usually route back through the agent.
  • Keep the agent confirmation and the airline PNR.
  • Without the airline PNR, claims often stall.

‍

What counts as extraordinary circumstances on a Qatar Airways flight?

Events genuinely outside Qatar Airways' control, which it must prove.

  • Airspace closures, airport attacks and war-related route suspensions.
  • Severe weather, ATC restrictions and security risks.
  • Routine technical faults and crew shortages do not count.
  • Even then, your refund and duty of care still apply.

‍

Does the 2026 Gulf conflict affect my Qatar Airways claim?

It can remove cash compensation on affected flights, but not your refund.

  • Qatari airspace closed on 28 February 2026, halting scheduled flights.
  • Riyadh and Dammam flights were suspended on 12 October 2026 (travel alerts).
  • Tickets for travel 28 February to 30 April 2026 qualified for a refund or date change.
  • Care, meals and hotel obligations still apply on EU and UK departures.

‍

What if I missed my connection in Doha?

If both flights were on one booking from the EU or UK, you may be owed compensation.

  • What matters is your arrival delay at the final destination.
  • 3+ hours late on an EU or UK departure journey can pay €600 or £520.
  • Separate tickets are treated as separate trips.
  • Journeys starting outside Europe rely on rebooking and refund rights.

‍

Does Gyro handle the appeal if Qatar Airways says no?

Yes. A first rejection is not the end of the claim.

  • Gyro challenges reflex "extraordinary circumstances" and voucher replies.
  • Cases are escalated to the regulator or court where needed.
  • You pay nothing unless money is recovered.
  • The success fee only applies to what you actually get.

‍

How does the 30% fee work?

It is a success fee, so there is no cost unless you are paid.

  • No upfront charge and no subscription.
  • Gyro takes 30% of what is recovered; you keep 70%.
  • That undercuts the 35–50% charged by some rivals.
  • If nothing is recovered, you owe nothing.
