What is American Airlines required to pay you for a delayed or cancelled flight?
American is a US carrier, so US DOT rules cover every flight that touches the US. If American cancels or significantly changes your flight and you choose not to travel, you are owed a cash refund. US law sets no cash payout for delays alone, and the DOT withdrew its proposed delay compensation rule in November 2025.
Statutory compensation depends on the route instead. Leaving an EU, EEA or Swiss airport, EU261 pays up to €600. Leaving the UK, UK261 pays up to £520. To, from or within Canada, APPR pays up to CAD $1,000. Almost all of American's European departures are transatlantic, so the top long-haul band applies.
American's own policy makes most fares non-refundable and turns a voluntary cancellation into a trip credit. A cancellation or significant change by American (3+ hours domestic, 6+ hours international) entitles you to cash instead, within 7 business days to a card or 20 days for other payment methods.
Important: Direction matters. An American flight from New York to London is not covered by EU261 or UK261, because American is not a UK or EU carrier. The return flight from London is. And a trip credit never cancels the compensation you are owed.

Am I Eligible for American Airlines Compensation?
Likely eligible:
- Arrived 3+ hours late on a flight from an EU, EEA, Swiss or UK airport, for a cause American controlled
- Flew to, from or within Canada and arrived 3+ hours late for a controllable reason
- Had a flight leaving Europe cancelled with under 14 days' notice and no close reroute
- Were bumped from an oversold flight after checking in on time
- Had a flight cancelled or moved 3+ hours (domestic) or 6+ hours (international) and didn't travel
- Are still owed a fare refund American parked as a trip credit you never chose
Unlikely to be eligible:
- Arrival delay under 3 hours
- Genuine extraordinary circumstance (severe weather, ATC strike, security or airspace closure)
- A delay on a US-only route (refund or care rights, but no cash payout)
- You were told 14+ days ahead, cancelled yourself, or no-showed
- You want hotels, meals or lost earnings paid as "compensation" (those are care or consequential costs)
How Much Can You Claim?
Scenario
Distance band
Amount per person
Fixed cash under EU261, UK261 or APPR when American caused the delay. Paid on top of any refund and set by your route and distance.
A cancellation or a 3+ hour domestic / 6+ hour international change lets you take cash back to your card instead of the trip credit American offers.
If American never flew you and won't refund, dispute the charge with your card issuer, usually within about 120 days of the statement.
Covers costs the statutes won't, like prepaid hotels and missed tours, up to your policy limit. Keep every receipt.

Key insight:
Common American Airlines Claim Mistakes
"I accepted the trip credit, so I'm sorted."
A trip credit is not cash and does not settle EU261, UK261 or APPR compensation. You may be owed a refund and a payout.
"They said it was weather, so no payout."
Airlines overuse this. If the real cause was crew, maintenance or IT, compensation stands. Make American prove it.
"It was only delayed at takeoff."
Only arrival lateness at your final destination counts. A late departure that lands on time pays nothing; the reverse can pay.
"I booked through Expedia, so American won't deal with me."
Statutory claims go to the operating airline no matter where you bought the ticket. You need the airline record locator.
"It was months ago, too late now."
Windows run years in the UK and much of the EU. Older American disruptions are often still claimable.
"I only checked the one bad flight."
Most travelers forget other eligible flights. A 3-year inbox scan surfaces claims you didn't know you had.
"My ticket was cheap, so the payout is small."
Distance sets compensation, not fare. Basic Economy and Flagship Business on the same London departure pay the same.
"My New York to London flight landed 5 hours late, so I get £520."
Not on an American-operated flight into Europe. Only departures from the UK or EU qualify, unless BA or another European airline operated it.
