What is JetBlue required to pay you for a delayed or cancelled flight?

On US and Caribbean flights, the law gives you a refund, not compensation. Under the US DOT refund rule, if JetBlue cancels your flight or changes it significantly (3+ hours domestic, 6+ hours international) and you decline the alternative, it must return your fare to your original payment method.

Cash compensation comes from European and Canadian law. EU261 pays up to €600 on JetBlue flights departing Amsterdam, Barcelona, Dublin, Madrid, Milan or Paris. UK261 pays up to £520 on flights departing London or Edinburgh. Canada's APPR pays up to CAD $1,000 on flights to or from Vancouver.

JetBlue's own Customer Service Plan pays 5,000 TrueBlue points for a controllable delay over 3 hours or a controllable cancellation within 4 hours of departure, but only if a TrueBlue account was on the booking before the disruption. It does not apply to Canada flights or flights departing Europe.

‍

Important

A JetBlue travel credit or TrueBlue points do not settle a statutory claim. On a flight from Paris, London or Vancouver you can still claim the full cash amount, and on any cancelled flight you can refuse credit and take your money back.

Am I Eligible for JetBlue Compensation?

Likely eligible:

  • You departed an EU or UK airport and arrived 3+ hours late for a cause JetBlue controlled
  • JetBlue cancelled your flight from Europe with under 14 days' notice
  • You flew to or from Vancouver and arrived 3+ hours late for a controllable, non-safety reason
  • You were bumped from an oversold flight after checking in on time
  • Your flight was cancelled or significantly changed and you chose not to fly
  • JetBlue issued travel credit when you were owed a cash refund

‍

Unlikely to be eligible:

  • Your delayed flight was from the US to Europe (JetBlue is not an EU carrier)
  • You arrived less than 3 hours late
  • The cause was severe weather, air traffic control limits or a security event
  • You were told about a Europe cancellation 14+ days before departure
  • You want lost earnings, missed events or prepaid hotels paid as compensation

‍

How Much Can You Claim?

Compensation is fixed by flight distance, not by what you paid for the ticket.

Statutory Compensation

EU261, UK261 or APPR cash, set by route and arrival delay. It is paid on top of any refund, rebooking, meals or hotel JetBlue provides.

Fare Refund

Cancelled or significantly changed and you didn't fly? You are owed cash to your original payment method. JetBlue's default is travel credit, so ask for cash.

Card Chargeback

If JetBlue won't refund a cancelled flight, dispute the charge with your card issuer. Most schemes allow about 120 days; UK cardholders can also use Section 75.

Travel Insurance

Covers what statutory rules won't: prepaid hotels, missed events, extra nights. Check your policy and any co-branded card trip-delay benefit.

Key Rules & Distinctions

Statutory Compensation

EU261, UK261 and APPR measure the delay at arrival, when the doors open, not at takeoff. A 2h50m delay pays nothing; 3h05m on a Paris-Boston flight can pay €300 or more.

Which Direction You Flew

EU261 covers non-EU airlines only on flights departing the EU, and UK261 works the same way for the UK. JetBlue's Paris-Boston flight is covered; Boston-Paris is not.

Extraordinary Circumstances

Severe weather, air traffic control restrictions and security threats remove cash compensation. Routine technical faults, crew shortages and IT outages usually do not. Refund and care rights survive either way.

Canada's Control Categories

APPR pays cash only when the disruption was within JetBlue's control and not required for safety. Safety-related and uncontrollable delays still trigger rebooking, care and, in many cases, a refund.

Cash Refund vs Travel Credit

JetBlue's refund page says most refunds go to travel credit, valid 12 months. When JetBlue cancels or significantly changes your flight, you can choose cash to your original payment method instead.

Points vs Statutory Cash

The 5,000 TrueBlue points are voluntary and paid only to members enrolled before the disruption. On Europe departures and Canada flights, JetBlue applies EU261, UK261 or APPR instead of points.

Key insight:

The value is not filing one form. It is refusing the reflex travel credit, challenging a vague "weather" or "ATC" code, claiming under the rule that pays most for your direction of travel, and never missing the window.

Common JetBlue Claim Mistakes

"JetBlue gave me travel credit, so I'm sorted."

Credit isn't compensation. On a cancelled flight you can take cash instead, and EU, UK or Canada claims are separate.

‍

"They said it was weather, so no payout."

Ask for the reason in writing. Knock-on crew or aircraft problems hours later are often within JetBlue's control.

‍

"It was only delayed at takeoff."

Arrival time counts. A late departure plus holding or a gate wait can push you past 3 hours.

‍

"My Boston-London flight was late, so UK261 applies."

Direction matters. Only JetBlue flights departing the UK or EU qualify. The return leg may still pay.

‍

"I booked through Expedia, so JetBlue won't deal with me."

The operating airline owes statutory compensation wherever you booked. Add your TrueBlue number to OTA bookings for points.

‍

"It was months ago, too late now."

EU and UK windows run 2–6 years depending on the country. APPR allows 1 year.

‍

"I only checked the one bad flight."

Most travelers have more than one eligible flight in three years of email.

‍

"My fare was cheap, so the payout is small."

Distance and delay set the amount. A $350 Paris-Boston fare can still pay €600.

Frequently Asked
Questions

Does JetBlue pay compensation for delayed flights?

Yes, but the form depends on your route.

  • Flights departing the EU or UK: cash under EU261 or UK261
  • Flights to or from Canada: cash under APPR
  • US and Caribbean flights: 5,000 TrueBlue points for controllable delays over 3 hours
  • US law itself sets no fixed delay payout

‍

How much compensation can I get from JetBlue?

Up to €600, £520 or CAD $1,000 per passenger on covered routes.

  • €600 on EU departures with 4+ hours' delay; €300 at 3–4 hours
  • £520 on UK departures with 4+ hours' delay; £260 at 3–4 hours
  • CAD $400 to $1,000 on Canada flights, by delay length
  • Denied boarding on US flights: up to $2,150

‍

Does EU261 apply to JetBlue?

Only on flights departing an EU airport.

  • Covered: Amsterdam, Barcelona, Dublin, Madrid, Milan and Paris to the US
  • Not covered: US to Europe, because JetBlue is a US carrier
  • London and Edinburgh departures fall under UK261 instead
  • Current EU261 rules apply until the 2026 reform takes effect, expected in 2027

‍

What is the difference between a JetBlue refund and compensation?

A refund returns your fare; compensation pays for the disruption.

  • Refund: owed when you don't fly a cancelled or significantly changed flight
  • Compensation: a fixed amount under EU261, UK261 or APPR
  • You can receive both on the same flight
  • Meals and hotels are care, a third separate right

‍

Should I accept JetBlue travel credit or TrueBlue points?

Not as a substitute for cash you are owed.

  • Travel credit expires 12 months from original ticketing
  • After a cancellation you can pick a refund to your card instead
  • Points never replace EU261, UK261 or APPR compensation
  • Accept credit only if you prefer it and it doesn't waive other claims

‍

What if I'm not a TrueBlue member?

You miss JetBlue's points, not your legal rights.

  • Points go only to members on the booking before the disruption
  • DOT refunds apply to every passenger
  • EU261, UK261 and APPR don't require membership
  • Join before your next flight so future points are automatic

‍

How long do I have to claim from JetBlue?

From 1 year to 6 years, depending on the rule.

  • APPR: 1 year to claim from JetBlue
  • EU261: 2 years (Netherlands) to 6 years (Ireland)
  • UK261: 6 years in England & Wales, 5 in Scotland
  • Hotel reimbursement requests: within 10 days of the expense

‍

What if I booked JetBlue through a travel agency or OTA?

You can still claim; JetBlue as an operating carrier is liable.

  • Statutory compensation follows the airline that operated the flight
  • Refunds of the fare usually go through the booking source
  • Add your TrueBlue number to the booking to receive points
  • On a United-operated Blue Sky flight, United is the operating carrier

‍

What counts as extraordinary circumstances for JetBlue?

Events outside JetBlue's control that it couldn't avoid.

  • Usually extraordinary: severe weather, ATC restrictions, security threats
  • Usually not: routine technical faults, crew shortages, IT outages
  • JetBlue must prove the cause, not just name it
  • Your refund and care rights remain either way

‍

Does Gyro handle the appeal if JetBlue rejects my claim?

Yes. Gyro challenges rejections automatically.

  • Vague "weather" or "ATC" codes are contested with flight data
  • Claims are escalated to the national enforcement body or CTA where available
  • Legal escalation is available when a case needs it
  • Gyro handles the process; it doesn't guarantee outcomes

‍

How does Gyro's 30% fee work?

You pay 30% of what's recovered, and nothing if nothing is.

  • No upfront cost or subscription
  • You keep 70% of every recovered amount
  • The fee covers all recovery paths, not just EU261
  • Market leaders typically charge 35–50%
