What Ryanair Owes You
Ryanair is registered in Ireland and flies a short-haul European network plus Morocco and Albania. EU261 (Regulation 261/2004) therefore covers every EU or EEA departure and, because Ryanair is an EU carrier, arrivals into the EU from Morocco or Albania. UK261 mirrors it on UK departures. US DOT and Canadian APPR rules never apply, since Ryanair does not fly to North America.
A refund and compensation are separate entitlements, and one flight can owe you both. A refund returns your fare when Ryanair cancels or when a delay of five hours or more makes you abandon the trip. Compensation is a fixed cash sum, set by distance rather than fare, triggered by a 3+ hour arrival delay, a cancellation notified under 14 days ahead, or denied boarding.
Ryanair's own published refund policy pays refunds into your Ryanair Wallet within 24 hours, then to your original payment method within 5 working days once you request the transfer. EU261 requires the money within 7 days. Bookings made through an online travel agent need a customer verification form first and take longer.
Important
A Wallet balance or voucher is not your compensation. Accepting one does not settle a statutory EU261 or UK261 claim, and you can insist on cash to your original card. Ryanair rejects a large share of first-time claims, so a denial letter is not the end of the process.
Am I Eligible for Ryanair Compensation?
Likely eligible:
- You arrived 3+ hours late for a reason within Ryanair's control.
- Ryanair cancelled less than 14 days ahead and did not reroute you close to your original times.
- You were denied boarding on an oversold flight after checking in on time.
- Your flight departed an EU, EEA or UK airport, which covers almost the entire network.
- You missed a connection on a single Ryanair booking because the first leg was late.
- Ryanair still owes a fare refund, or parked your money in a Wallet balance you never agreed to keep.
Unlikely to be eligible:
- Your arrival delay was under 3 hours.
- The cause was a genuine extraordinary circumstance, such as severe weather, ATC strike action or airspace closure.
- Ryanair told you about the cancellation 14 or more days in advance.
- You cancelled voluntarily, changed your own flight, or did not show up.
- You want hotels, meals or lost earnings paid as "compensation" (those are duty-of-care or consequential items).
How Much Can You Claim?
Scenario
Distance band
Amount per person
The fixed cash payment for a qualifying delay, short-notice cancellation or denied boarding. Filed on Ryanair's EU261 form, escalated to the enforcement body if refused.
Your ticket price back in cash to the original card. Ryanair defaults to a Wallet balance, so you have to actively request the transfer. Taxes are refundable even on unused non-refundable fares.
If Ryanair or an OTA never pays, dispute the charge with your card issuer. UK cardholders also have Section 75 protection on credit card purchases between 100 GBP and 30,000 GBP.
Covers the consequential costs EU261 will not pay: prepaid hotels, missed transfers, replacement tickets. Check policy limits and the notification window before you spend.

Key insight:
Common Ryanair Claim Mistakes
"I took the Wallet credit, so I am sorted"
Credit repays your fare, not your compensation. The statutory claim survives, and you can still demand cash to your original card.
"They said it was weather, so there is no payout"
Weather must have directly caused your disruption. Enforcement bodies overturn plenty of these refusals, and a first denial is routine.
"It was only delayed at takeoff"
Only arrival time matters. Crews often make time up in the air, so check the actual landing time before writing the claim off.
"I booked through eDreams, so Ryanair will not deal with me"
Compensation is always the operating airline's obligation. Only the fare refund routes back through the agent, after Ryanair verifies you.
"That flight was two years ago, too late now"
Ireland and England and Wales allow 6 years. European limits run from 2 to 6, so old Ryanair flights are frequently still live.
"I only checked the one really bad flight"
Most travellers have more than one eligible flight in their inbox, often on other airlines they never thought to check.
"My ticket was 19 EUR, the payout will be tiny"
Distance sets the amount, not the fare. A cheap seat on a qualifying route still carries the full 250 or 400 EUR.
"Ryanair rejected it, so that is the end"
A refusal is a stage, not a verdict. Escalating to the national enforcement body is free and often changes the outcome.
